Apollo Bay
History
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, Apollo Bay and its' surrounding area was inhabited by three Aboriginal tribes who lived largely on the produce of the sea. Ancient middens of shells have been discovered on the Otway Peninsula near the Aire River. These middens are now legally protected sites.
In the 1840's the Henty brothers established a small whaling station at Point Bunbury which is where the Apollo Bay golf course now stands.
Situated ~190km from Melbourne on the edge of a sweeping bay, Apollo Bay is a scenic small seaside town. It is perched between the rolling green hills of the Otways and the blue of the Southern ocean. Apollo Bay boast a vast array of accommodation from cabins and cottages to hotels and motels.
The Apollo Bay Market
The Apollo Bay market is well worth a visit. Held every Saturday morning on The Foreshore by the Tourist Information Office it features a diverse range of local produce from eggs to glass ware. The market is a must for anyone looking to sample a flavour of this friendly town or track down a unique souvenir of their trip.
Cape Otway LighthouseThe oldest surving lighthouse on mainland Australia began operating in 1848. It was built to help guide ships into the narrow Bass Strait entrance between the coast and King Island, following a string of tragic shipwrecks that claimed hundreds of lives. The lighthouse stands 91 metres above the ocean and has been replaced by an unmanned, solar-powered light. Tours of the historic lighstation operate daily. |
